“It is the distinguishing glory of Christianity not to rest satisfied with superficial appearances, but to rectify the motives, and purify the heart.” -William Wilberforce

The William Wilberforce Award was given to the Vicar of Baghdad by the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, this month. The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew White was recognized for his tireless and courageous work leading St. George’s Church since 1998. It is in the middle of what is now the “Red Zone” Baghdad. He has remained faithful at his post, at the largest remaining church in Iraq despite the threat to his life. He has lost 1,276 members of his flock to violent death in just the past few years, carrying on his incredible ministry to the poor of all faiths in that country.

Andrew White is a man who understands something of Wilberforce’s charge for us to live beyond “superficial appearances”, to set right and straight our motives, and to live undefiled by the world. The entire award conference was about the idols in our society, namely, Self, Sex, Stuff and State. Many great challenges were given to live for God and others, a theme that our I Am Second message helped advance. Yet, as I thought of living well for others, I was reminded by Canon White, that this is not enough. Our Father in Heaven is pleased by our living for others, and by our loving Him in our obedience. And holiness is a part of that!

Let us be focused on both the first and second parts of James 1:27… “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction…and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

Love and live second to Jesus and all that He commanded. This is the mission of e3 Partners and I Am Second. Want to join us?

Love well, live Second!
