The Sweetest Words I’ve Ever Heard
August 29, 2014
“Granddaddy, she actually prayed to receive The Lord!”
My granddaughter, Molly, just turned seven years old this month. In the same week, she joined us in Cusco, Peru for her first mission trip! It was such a joy to have my wife, daughter, and granddaughter all on the field with me. It was such a blessing to experience three generations of family together on a mission trip for the first time.
The ultimate highlight was seeing my Molly excitedly run up to me after sharing the Gospel with a lady, delightedly exclaiming, “Granddaddy, she actually prayed to receive the Lord!”
It was such a transformational moment for me, as much as for Molly and the lady. Silver and gold have I none, but who needs it after a moment like that! How much richer can you be than seeing God work through your children and grandchildren? It is all a work of God, by his grace, and for his glory.
There is so much conversation today about the concept of being “missional.” Churches and Christians are called to be missional. We even talk about living missionally as families. But what does it mean? I’m not too sure but I know what it looks like. It looks like a child innocently sharing the Gospel in simple obedience and words, then shouting in pure joy and wonder.
So how can you experience this joy of living missionally and knowing that generations will follow you? You can start by joining us on a short-term expedition. Take your children with you. Model it for them. Release the to experience God as never before. Do that a few times, then wait 20 years.
But don’t confine it to travelling abroad. Be missional at home, work, school, and play. Life second as though everything and every day of this life will count for eternity. Because it does!
Keep living on mission and keep that childlike wonder when they prayer to receive the Lord!
